Child labour has increasingly become a global concern with nearly 246 mn children engaged in various kinds of work around the world. Of these, as many as 126 mn are estimated to be labouring under dangerous conditions. Incidentally, Asia and Africa together account for over 90% of the total child employment. In India, as per the 2001 census, there are nearly 1.26 cr children labouring in the 5-14 age group of which 12.6 lakh are said to be working in hazardous conditions.
